WATCH THE RECORDING NOW!

September 17–26 , 2020, at Stewart Park! The Cherry Arts presented The Fan by Carlo Goldoni, a huge, outdoor, family-friendly farce from the still-hilarious 18th-century author of The Servant of Two Masters. This production featured a socially-distanced cast with elaborate, comic COVID masks, and heightened movement vividly visible to a distanced audience. In a new form we are calling “lip-sync without lips,” the entire production will be performed to a prerecorded track replete with dialogue, music, and ridiculous sound effects. The show was available to be watched online or in (distanced, outdoor, masked) person. A first experiment in “lip-sync without lips” can be seen at thecherry.org/TheFanSneakPeek. Directed and in a new adaptation by Artistic Director Samuel Buggeln.

The seating was carefully arranged for this outdoor play so that social distance was maintained at all times. Our safety precautions met and exceeded New York State’s guidelines for low risk outdoor arts and entertainment events.

Carlo Osvaldo Goldoni (playwright) was born in Venice in 1707. He was interested in theatre from a very young age. After earning a degree in law from the University of Modena, and practicing law for a few years at Chioggia and Feltre, he returned to his childhood passion. One of the most successful writers of his time, Goldoni wrote well over 150 comedies as well as a handful of dramas between 1733 and his death in 1793, including the well-known “The Servant of Two Masters.” In one season, as a publicity stunt, he swore to write and produce sixteen plays— and did. As a feud with another Italian playwright, Carlo Gozzi, grew intense, he decided that his countrymen did not appreciate his style of writing enough, and moved to Paris, France, where he was placed in charge of the Comédie Italienne, the country’s second-largest theater after the Comédie Française. He wrote “The Fan” for that company in 1765. Goldoni retired to Versailles in 1769 with a pension provided by King Louis XVI of France, but lost it when the king was executed in the French Revolution, and eventually died in poverty.
