International Lover
June Dance 2025 is excited and delighted to bring back to Ithaca International Lover, the tale of an artist in pursuit of a dream. In this boldly vulnerable theatrical experience, Troy Lingelbach shares their journey of self-acceptance. Through trapeze work, dance, and performance art, the artist exposes the conflict of their mind, body, and spirit, reckoning with gender, relationships, identity, addiction, and injury. Learning to embrace their fullest self, Troy becomes the International Lover (Prince, 1999).
The story is brought to life through dance on the ground and in the air without any spoken word. The score, which fuses Woodstock-era rock-and-roll, jazz, funk, and Prince deep cuts, shares the artist’s inner dialogue.
International Lover debuted at the 2024 Hupstate Circus Festival, and was originally conceived during the 2024 Hupstate Circus Artist Residency. It recently had its NYC premier with a sold-out showing at House of Yes. In May 2025, it will be presented at the inaugural Philadelphia Contemporary Circus Festival.
Crossovers
‘Crossovers’ explores human states of being such as consciousness in one’s own body, consciousness in other bodies, and speculations on the nature of ‘crossing over’ or afterlife consciousness. Two Ithaca based movement artists will show their versions and interpretations of the Crossovers idea. Robin Guiver and Jim Self bring their combined movement knowledge based in acrobatic dance, physical theater, modern and post-modern dance, performance art, and movement storytelling.
Artist Bios
Robin Guiver is an actor, physical performer, movement and puppetry artist. Recently relocated from the UK to North America with his family, he’s a dad, board gamer, sci-fi and fantasy enthusiast, amateur illustrator and martial artist. For the past two decades he has worked in film, TV, and live theater.
Troy Lingelbach is a staple of the NYC variety and nightlife scene, regularly performing at House of Yes, Company XIV, The Box, and The Stranger, and has travelled the world teaching and performing. In this departure from the cabaret format, International Lover invites audiences to intimately experience the parts of Troy never before seen.
Jim Self, described as a “post-modern bad boy” and a “uniquely eccentric artist,” by the Village Voice works in dance, painting, performance, writing, and installation. A New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) winner, and Cornell dance faculty from 1989- 2014, he’s been a member of the NYS DanceForce since 2007. In 2021 he created June Dance at the Cherry in Ithaca featuring artists from Tompkins County and NY State.
Self danced with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (1976-1979), choreographed and performed with Robert Wilson / Byrd Hoffman School for Byrds, founded the touring company Jim Self and Dancers, and with Frank Moore created BEEHIVE, a film and ballet depicting the stories of a worker bee and a drone. His work has been commissioned by the Boston Ballet, the Rome Opera Ballet, American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Dance Theater Workshop, the Serious Fun! Festival, Centre National de Danse Contemporaine d’Angers/France, WerkCentrumDans/Rotterdam, Sundance Institute/Ballet West, and Cornell University
